Fact Check: Rahul Gandhi Quoted Nehru’s Letter, Clipped Video Viral With Misleading Claims

Date:

A viral video of Rahul Gandhi claiming that he spoke to Mahatma Gandhi is doing the rounds on social media. In the short 42-second clip, Rahul can be heard saying, “…on this issue I had a discussion with Gandhiji. My entire mind and logic say that on this issue, Gandhi is wrong and I am right. But I know from within that my mind is telling me he (Gandhi) is wrong and I’m right. But I know that he is right and I am wrong.”

Many users are sharing the post online, making fun of the congress leader for speaking such things. A Facebook user posted the viral video with the caption: इन्होंने गांधी जी से डायरेक्ट बात की है! कि आखिर 15 अगस्त को भांग गाजे की दुकान आखिर बंद क्यों करवाते हो तुम (English translation: He spoke directly to Gandhiji. Why do you get the cannabis shop closed on August 15?)

FACT CHECK

When NewsMobile fact-checked, the viral video was found to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, we found a YouTube video by The Economic Times, dated March 12, 2022, with a title: ‘Don’t accept failure till elections are over: Rahul Gandhi on Gujarat polls to be held in December’.

We could not find the exact video clipping in the YouTube video. However, the background to the podium where he is standing matches exactly with the viral video.

And on the top right corner of the video, the channel has given the video courtesy to Indian National Congress’ YouTube channel with a description: The Gujarat unit of the Congress held a three-day brainstorming session ‘Chintan Shivir’ to discuss a detailed strategy for the upcoming state assembly polls.

With the Google Keyword Search about the event, we found a live video dated February 26, 2022 titled: Shri Rahul Gandhi’s address at the Chintan Shivir in Dwarka, Gujarat, posted on Indian National Congress’ official YouTube channel. The video background matches exactly with the viral video.

At the 30:00 minute mark, Rahul Gandhi can be heard saying the exact words as in the viral video. Little before that, he says: “There was a major difference between Gandhiji and other leaders. My great-grandfather used to work with Gandhiji as well. I read one of his letters that he wrote to someone about Gandhiji. In the letter, Nehruji writes: ‘I had a discussion with Mahatma Gandhi on this issue. My entire mind and logic are saying that on this issue, Gandhi is wrong and I am right. But I know from within that my mind is telling me he (Gandhi) is wrong and I’m right. I know that he is right and I am wrong.”

The video keyframes from 30:00 – 30:48 match exactly with the viral video, thereby proving that the viral video is edited from the original 59-minute video. Rahul Gandhi is talking about the letter that his great-grandfather wrote about Mahatama Gandhi, but the video has been clipped in such a way to make it look otherwise.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video claiming Rahul Gandhi spoke to Mahatama Gandhi is misleading with the intent to troll him.
