Following a gruesome attack on the well-acclaimed author Salman Rushdie in New York, a quote attributed to him is doing the rounds on social media, in which he criticises Muslim community.
The quote reads: “Muslims, whether they live in Pakistan or India, Nigeria or Syria, whether they are poor or rich, illiterate or educated, their only goal is to destroy the whole nation by terrorism, bomb blasts, population explosion, riots and jihad in the name of Islam.”

FACT CHECK
When NewsMobile fact-checked the above post, it was found to be misleading.
Even with a thorough Google search, we were not able to find any strong evidence in the form of news reports or interviews having the viral statement uttered by Salman Rushdie.
However, we came across a tweet by Rushdie himself, dated August 6, 2020, clarifying that he ‘never said anything of that sort’.
“This is a fake tweet, which seems to be circulating. I have never said anything of this sort,” he tweeted.
Though Rushdie received a lot of criticism for his book The Satanic Verses, and many Muslims across the world consider it to be blasphemous, the above information, however, proves that the viral statement is falsely attributed to Salman Rushdie.
