Taipei: US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s plane landed in Taiwan amid heightened security threats from China on Tuesday.

This is the first visit that has taken place after 25 years that has triggered global tension between the US and China. Nancy Pelosi in a statement right after landing in Taiwan added that “America’s solidarity with the 23 million people of Taiwan is more important today than ever, as the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy.”

She further added that “Our visit is one of several Congressional delegations to Taiwan – and it in no way contradicts long standing United States policy, guided by the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, U.S.-China Joint Communiques and the Six Assurances.”

China has earlier warned the US that it will “pay the price” if Pelosi visits Taiwan, which has now become the highest level of visit from US to Taiwan in more than two decade.

According to a Global Times report, the Chinese Foreign Minister in a statement added that “China will definitely take all necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its sovereignty & territorial integrity in response to the US Speaker’s visit. All the consequences must be borne by US & the “Taiwan independence” separatist forces.”

Before the Pelosi trip to Taiwan, China confirmed that they will conduct drills with live ammunition off its coast at one of the narrowest points of the Taiwan Strait.
