CWG 2022: Weightlifter Sanket Sargar Bags Silver As India Opens Its Medal Tally

Date:

Birmingham: Indian weightlifter Sanket Mahadev Sargar clinched a silver medal for India in the 55 Kg weight category with a total of 248 Kg in the ongoing Commonwealth Games on Saturday.

With this medal, India marks the first medal in the tally in this season of the Commonwealth Games 2022. The 21-years-old Sanket has landed India a medal even after going through an injury.

Malaysia’s Aniq Kasdan bags gold with a combined lift of 249 kg while Sri Lanka’s Dilanka Kumara clinches bronze with 225 kg.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and congratulated Sanket Sargar for bagging silver medal at the Commonwealth Games. He further added that “Exceptional effort by Sanket Sargar! His bagging the prestigious Silver is a great start for India at the Commonwealth Games.”

Sanket Sargar was looking to swiftly clinch gold but two failed clean and jerk attempts became a hurdle for him in finishing at the top.

Sanket Sagar hails from Sangli in Maharashtra. The 22-year-old is the reigning national-level champion in his weight category of 55 kg. Earlier in February this year, he had qualified for the Commonwealth Games with his performance at the Singapore Weightlifting International event.

At that event, he not only earned his qualification for the multi-sport event but also smashed the Commonwealth Championships and National Level record with a combined lift of 256 kg, which consists of 113 kg in the Snatch category and 143 in the Clean and Jerk category. This performance earned him a gold medal at the event.
