Fact Check: Anna Hazare Did Not Call For Hunger Strike Amid Maharashtra Political Crisis

Date:

Amid the ongoing political crisis in , a screenshot of a tweet, purportedly done by newswire Press Trust of India (PTI), is doing the rounds on social media. The tweet claims that social activist Anna Hazare has called for a hunger strike if Devendra Fadnavis is not made chief minister of Maharashtra.

The tweet reads: “If Devendra Fadnavis not made CM this time, then I will start hunger strike at Saki Naka railway station.” — Anna Hazare.

The above post can be seen here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be false.

On closely observing the screenshot, we noticed that the Twitter handle [@ZackRhea] in question is NOT verified (without blue tick). Whereas PTI’s official Twitter handle is @PTI_News, and has a blue tick.

We further ran a Google search with relevant keywords, but did not find any substantial report of Anna Hazare announcing a hunger strike.

Hence, it can be concluded that the screenshot of the tweet is falsely attributed to PTI and the news about Anna calling for a hunger strike is FAKE.
