Fact Check: No, The Viral Image Does NOT Show Army Aspirants Who Committed Suicide Due To ‘Agnipath’ Scheme

Date:

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced the ‘Agnipath’ scheme on June 14, 2022. According to this scheme, youngsters willing to join the forces will be appointed on a contractual basis for a period of four years. The announcement of the scheme has triggered massive protests across the country.

In the above context, an image is being widely shared on social media with a claim that two brothers, who were aspiring to join the Army, committed suicide post the announcement of the ‘Agnipath’ scheme.

The text embedded with the image reads, “सहारनपुर में दोनो सगे भाई आर्मी में फिट थे एक साथ दी जान MODI H TO MUMKIN H.” (English translation, “In Saharanpur, both brothers were fit for the army, gave life together MODI H TO MUMKIN H.”)

The link to the post can be seen here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did a fact-check and found the claim to be fake.

On doing a Google Reverse Image Search, we found the same image was uploaded on a slide on June 20, 2010. The title of the slide read, “Farmers suicides in India(Maharashtra).”

India TV also published the viral image on September 13, 2012, with a caption that read, “NHRC notice to Maharashtra on farmer suicides in Vidarbha.” The report associated with the image read, “Two farmers committed suicide, according to Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), a social group working among farmers.”

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral image is old and the viral claim is false.
