Beverage Companies Call For Delay on Plastic Straw Ban

Several beverage companies in India including Amul and Parle Agro, have urged the government to delay the ban on plastic straws until they get time to take effect next month.

Reports suggest that 12 lakh plastic straws are required every day by the Amul only, so they have proposed to make paper straws and set up their own factories to manufacture them.

Another major company that makes mango drink Frooti, Parle Agro ought to seek deferment for six-month to set up their local manufacturing capabilities.

“We have started importing paper straws to ensure the new rules are met by its deadline. Importing, however, is not a sustainable option”, “ Schauna Chauhan, CEO, Parle Agro stated in a statement.

Benefits of using a paper straw-
• They are biodegradable in nature
• For complete decomposition they took only six weeks and plastic straws can take 200 years
• They are quite affordable and can be purchased in bulk
• They are wildlife-friendly they do not create microplastics that harm the nature and are created by a plastic straw

Companies like Starbucks and McDonald’s adopted paper straws and eliminated plastic straws.

• They harm our wildlife and destroy oceans and rivers of clean water
• Injurious to health ma cause – bloating, wrinkles and cavities in teeth’s
