Fact Check: Did Abdul Kalam Ask For A Ban on Madarsa? Here’s The Truth

Date:

A picture of a newspaper clipping showing a quote attributed to former Indian President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam is being shared on social media. As per the clipping, Dr Kalam said that terrorism is taught in Madarsa.

(English translation: Muslims are not born terrorists. They are taught the Quran in madrasas, according to which they selectively kill Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, Christians, Jews and other non-Muslims. To control terrorism, it is very important to ban thousands of madarsas running in India.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found the claim to be false.

We ran an extensive keyword search, but did not find any credible media report to corroborate the viral claim.

On searching further, we found a blog post, dated December 14, 2014, where the same quote was used.

According to another report by The Quint, APJMJ Sheik Saleem, grandnephew of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, rubbished the viral claim. “This is a wrong message that has been circulating on social media. I also received the same message. But he never made these types of comments on any religion. He never interfered with religion.”

Hence, it is clear that the viral quote has been falsely attributed to APJ Abdul Kalam.
