Fact Check: A Fictional Story Of A Priest Converting To Islam Goes Viral On Social Media

Date:

Several social media users are sharing a newspaper clip which claims that a Christian priest converted to Islam after being in a coma for 17 months.

(English translation, “After being in a coma for 17 months, the priest embraced Islam A Catholic priest from Java Island, Indonesia, started reading Kalma as soon as he regained consciousness after being in a coma for 17 months. When people asked the reason for this, the priest claimed that he was ordered by Allah and he had seen the beauty of Paradise. Originally from Spain, the 87-year-old pastor had been residing in Java Island, Indonesia for the last 43 years. This elderly pastor had a special status among the people of his community regarding religious matters. After accepting Islam, the elder said that I had no knowledge about Islam. I never read Quran. But there was an instruction from Allah.”)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did a fact-check and found the claim to be fake.

We searched with appropriate keywords and found a report by Imediaethics on October 13, 2014.

The report read, “Malaysian newspaper Utusan Malaysia was duped by a fake news story claiming a Catholic priest converted to Islam after being in a coma for more than a year. Utusan Malaysia published a story about fake news which originated from a satire story on World News Daily’s website. World News Daily’s Oct. 10 story had claimed an 87-year-old Spanish priest living in Indonesia “has woken up from a 17 month long coma” and “converted himself to Islam after the man claims Allah spoke to him and showed him ‘the beauty of the heavens.’”

We also found that World News Daily had also deleted the report from its website.

However, we found that the World News Daily is a satirical website. The About Us section of the website reads, “Information contained in this World News Daily Report website is for information and entertainment purposes only.”

Hence, we can ascertain that a satirical news piece has gone viral as an actual news report.
