Fact Check: Has Poland Postal Services Issued A Stamp With Zelensky’s Photo?

Date:

Several social media users are sharing postal stamps having pictures of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The post also has another stamp with an image of Ukrainian leader Stepan Bandera on it. The postal stamps are shared with a claim suggesting Poland has issued a postage stamp with Zelensky’s picture.

The image is shared with a caption: “A postage stamp with a portrait of #Zelensky was issued in #Poland. Next, they should bring out stamps with a picture of Stepan Bandera — the infamous Ukrainian Nazi collaborator — with pictures of his war crimes against the Poles…oh wait! there is already a Bandera stamp.”

The link to the post can be seen here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did a fact-check and found the claim to be misleading.

We checked both the stamps separately and found the following:

Picture 1

We checked the Bandera postal stamp and found that the image was published by Wikimedia with a description: “Stamp of Ukraine: Stepan Bandera (1909-1959) 100 years of birth.” It was issued on January 1, 2009.

We found another website, Bigstock, which had also uploaded the same image with a caption: “UKRAINE – CIRCA 2009: Cancelled stamp printed in Ukraine shows Stepan Bandera, famous nationalist, leader of the terrorist activity of Ukrainian nationalists (Ukrainian Insurgent Army), Nazi collaborationist, circa 1987. 100th birth anniversary. vintage po.”

So, we can ascertain that the postal stamp of Stepan Bandera was issued by Ukraine and not Poland.

Picture 2

On scrolling through social media posts, we found that a user had tagged the post office of Poland with Zelensky’s postal stamp.

The Poland postal stamp replied to the Tweet, stating that the postal stamp with Zelensky’s picture was printed on special order by a customer and it is not for sale.

Tweet in Polish reads: “Znaczek z wizerunkiem Prezydenta W. Zełenskiego został zamówiony przez Klienta w ramach usługi “Mój Znaczek”. Usługa ta pozwala zaprojektować znaczek wedle własnej koncepcji. @PocztaPolska  nie prowadzi sprzedaży tych znaczków, są własnością Klienta.”

(English translation: “The stamp with the image of President W. Zelenskyy was ordered by the customer as part of the “My Stamp” service. This service allows you to design a stamp according to your own concept.@PocztaPolska does not sell these stamps, they are the property of the Customer.”)

Thus, we can ascertain that the postal stamp with Zelensky’s image was customary and was not issued by the Poland post office. Hence, the viral claim is misleading.
