Civic Body Trembles As Heavy Rains Hit Delhi-NCR

Date:

Gurugram: The commuters of Gurugram and the national capital faced intense rainfall and thunderstorm this week leading to massive waterlogging and traffic jams.

The Gurugram Traffic police in a tweet appealed to the daily office-goers to consider working from home amid the rainfall as the pressure of traffic and instances of waterlogging kept on increasing. The administration issued a notification suggesting offices consider the option of Working from Home to avoid a situation of traffic jams like the one that happened in 2016 on the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway.

A Twitter user in one of the tweets complained that “One rain and Gurgaon comes to a standstill with waterlogged roads and broken trees.” Several daily commuters complain about the traffic situation in the city. Residents also complained about the rampant power cuts in several parts of Gurugram since midnight. The power cuts have led to water supply shortages in several parts.

Several office goers complained that they were stuck in traffic jams for hours on Monday due to rain. A Twitter user in a tweet said that “I guess good weather always comes with bad traffic.”

The situation in the national capital remained similar in terms of preparedness. Waterlogging was reported in several parts of Delhi.

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party blamed the BJP-led MCD saying that 95% of the drainage system was filled with silt and that MCD has done nothing to ensure the cleaning of these drains.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi in a statement responded that more than 60,000 tonnes of silt have been removed from drains by the workers ahead of the monsoon season and the work is under process and is likely to be over by the end of June.
