Fact Check: 2020 Video From Uttar Pradesh Viral As Police Thrashing People In Assam

A video of cops chasing and arresting people is being shared on social claiming that Assam police officials are thrashing members of a minority community for demanding a separate nation.

The caption of the video read, “आसाम में मुसलमानों ने अलग देश बनाने के लिए जुलूस निकाला, फिर उनका हाल देखिए आसाम के मुख्यमंत्री योगी से भी दो कदम आगे है… जय श्री राम”

(English Translation: In Assam, Muslims took out a procession, demanding a separate country, then look at their condition, the Chief Minister of Assam is two steps ahead of Yogi… Jai Shri Ram)

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be false.

We extracted the keyframes of the video and put them through a Reverse Image Search. The search led us to the same video featured in a report by NDTV dated April 6, 2020.

According to the report, the video is from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh where people were flouting lockdown and attacked the police when they were asked to follow lockdown protocols.

News 24 also covered the same incident in April 2020. The report mentioned that after the attack, police had to call the backup and a few police personnel were also reportedly injured.

According to a News18 report, the incident took place in Karampur Chaudhary village which falls in the Bareilly district and the police detained 40-50 people following the incident.

Hence, from the above fact check, it is clear that the viral video is old and is being shared with a false claim.
