Energy Crisis Grips Country Due To Coal Shortage Amid Record Heat

Date:

New Delhi: As the country is going through one of the most extreme summers this year, power demands are at it’s peak.

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) alerted states like Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab of extreme temperature rises in the coming days.

While India battles the worst power crisis in the last six years, the Ministry of Power stated that the electricity demand has increased by 12.1% to 204.653 GW 182.559 GW during the same period, last year.

Reportedly, the power supply fell short by 1.6% this month, leading to power cuts across the country ranging from 2 hours to 8 hours.

Delhi:

Satyendra Jain, Delhi Power Minister, wrote a letter to the central government on Thursday to supply adequate coal to the power plants responsible for supplying electricity in Delhi.

According to reports, due to a supply crisis in the Dadri-II plant and Unchahar power plant, the government has said that this may lead to power cuts in crucial institutions like hospitals and metros in the national capital. According to another report, the Unchahar plant has two days worth of stock left with them. 25% to 35% of the power demands are met through these power stations in Delhi.

Maharashtra

Amid the increase in temperature, parts of Mumbai are facing power cuts. According to a report, the state of Maharashtra is facing a power shortage of 3,500 MW per day. Mumbai has a power demand of 3,500 MW which is being tackled by Adani Electricity and Tata Power but the demand in the rest of Maharashtra is around 28,500 MW which is supplied by Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDC). MSEDC can supply only 25,000 MW amid the shortage in stock.

Haryana:

After reporting a dip in the coal reserve, the Haryana government will meet the additional demand by securing coal stock from other states like Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.

Ranjeet Singh, Power Minister of Haryana in an interview said that “We will tackle the situation within a week. 1200-1400 MW additional power would be taken from Adani. Power consumption has increased. Further, 350 MW of additional power would be taken from Chhattisgarh and 150 MW from Madhya Pradesh.”

Uttar Pradesh

According to reports, Uttar Pradesh has lost more than 280 million units of power this month due to a lack of coal in stock. The Energy Minister of UP in an interview said that the issue of power cuts in the state is alarming. Currently, Uttar Pradesh faces a shortage of 3,000 MW. The state has a demand of 23,000 MW but can meet 20,000 MW.

Bihar

According to Bihar Energy Secretary Sanjeev Hans, the state is facing a deficit of 200- 300 MW per day. The Press Trust of India reported that the peak demand for energy in the state is around 6000 MW per day but the supply remains at 5,000- 5,200 MW.

Andhra Pradesh

According to reports, the state is facing a shortage of 200 million units per day. The state Energy Secretary said that the crisis is a nationwide phenomenon and might ease by the end of April. The power distribution companies (discoms) are observing a two days ‘power holiday’ for industries in the state every week.

Punjab

The power minister Harbhajan Singh on Wednesday said that the state is facing a shortage in power supply. The stock of coal at the Ropar thermal plant and Lehra Mohabbat plant is worrisome with stocks that will support for 8.3 days and four days respectively. According to data, the electricity demand shot up by 40% amid the scorching heat and increase in temperature. The state already touched the mark of 8,000 MW in demand this month.
