Fact Check: This Video Does NOT Show People Reciting Azan On Road After Loudspeaker Ban

Amid the ongoing row over banning use of loudspeakers in mosques, a video of people reciting Azan (Islamic prayers) on the road at night is being circulated on social media with a text claiming that this shows ‘consequences of switching off loudspeakers in Mumbai’.

Facebook users are sharing the post with the caption, “मुंबई में लाउड स्पीकर बंद करने के नतीजे देखलो”

(English Translation: See the consequences of switching off loudspeakers in Mumbai)

Here’s the link to the above post.

Some users also claimed that the video is from Uttar Pradesh.  They shared the video with the caption, “The scene after the ban on loudspeakers in UP, these people are determined that they will never improve, they have to spoil everyone’s sleep by shouting.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found that the video is old.

We extracted keyframes of the video and put them through Reverse Image Search which led us to the same video which was uploaded on YouTube on April 19, 2020. The title of the video read, “#मस्जिद बंद तो सड़क पे शुरू आखिर कैसे समझाएं इन को… #lockdown #coronavirus #nawaz #mosque #worship.”

(English Translation: The mosques are closed so they have started on the road only, how to explain it to them? #lockdown #coronavirus #nawaz #mosque #worship)

A Facebook user also uploaded the same video with the same caption on April 17, 2020.

With this, we could establish that the video is old. We then analysed the video carefully and identified some of the names on the boards above the shops. One of the boards read ‘Yashika Stores’ while another one read ‘Dr N Rai’. We also notice a board of ‘New Shimla Biryani’ on the other side of the road.

We also found that one of the boards had Howrah written in the address line.

We ran a search and found that all the shops are located at Pilkhana in Howrah, West Bengal.

From the above information, it is clear that the above video is OLD and is NOT from Mumbai or Uttar Pradesh. Hence, we can conclude that the video is being shared with a false claim.
