Fact Check: EAM S Jaishankar Did NOT Suggest That Sri Lanka Should Become A Part Of India

Date:

With Sri Lanka facing one of its worst economic and political crises, India has extended assistance through financial packages to help the island nation meet some of its pressing needs.

In the wake of the crisis, a screenshot of a tweet purportedly done by Dr. S Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, is being circulated on social media. The viral tweet suggests that Sri Lanka should become a part of India.

The tweet read, “If the people of Sri Lanka are agreeable India is willing to proclaim that Sri Lanka becomes a State of India. As a result, India will be able to solve the gas, fuel, milk food, fertilizer and many other essential goods problems that the country is facing. Additionally, India will look after all the future issues of Sri Lanka too. India is extending an hand of survival to people of Sri Lanka.”

Facebook users are sharing the post with the caption, “See the plan! Get ready for Indian Passport!!!!”

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found it to be false.

The first thing we noticed while analysing the tweet was that it exceeded the character limit set by Twitter, which is 280 characters. The tweet in question exceeds the limit by 118 characters.

We then scanned through the official Twitter handle of Dr S Jaishankar but did not find any similar tweet where it was suggested that Government of India wants Sri Lanka to be a part of India.

On Searching further, we found that the official handle of the High Commission of India in Colombo, Sri Lanka had refuted the viral claim.

We have seen a morphed image purported to be from the Twitter handle of External Affairs Minister @DrSJaishankar. “This is completely fake and fabricated. We strongly deny its malicious contents. Such mischievous attempts by desperate parties will never succeed in affecting (1/2)…the close, friendly and age-old ties between #India and #SriLanka,” the tweet thread read.

Hence, from the above information, it is clear that the viral post in circulation is fake and no such tweet was done by External Affairs Minister Dr Jaishankar.
