Fact Check: No, This Viral Video Does Not Show Russia’s Guided-Missile Cruiser Moskva Exploding In Black Sea

Date:

On April 14, 2022, Ukraine claimed that it has hit Russian Navy’s Black Sea flagship with Neptune missiles and caused damage to the vessel. Following this, a video is being widely circulated on social media platforms showing a ship exploding in the sea. The caption of the video suggests that the video shows Russia’s Moskva exploding.

A Twitter user shared the video with the caption, “How “Moscow” burns: a video of the explosion of a Russian cruiser after being hit by a Ukrainian missile was published by the founder of the Azov Regiment, Andriy Biletsky #RussianWarship #StopRussia.”

Several Facebook users are sharing the video with a similar claim.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the video and found it to be shared with false claims.

We extracted the keyframes of the video and performed Reverse Image Search. In the results, we found the same in a video that was uploaded on the SWNS YouTube channel on June 6, 2013.

“Norwegian Navy Test Missile Strike”, reads the title of the video. As per the description of the video, “This is the dramatic moment a ship is blown up to demonstrate a powerful new missile. The Norwegian armed forces took a decommissioned frigate out into the sea for a game of target practice. They then fired the new ‘Joint Strike Missile’ at the vessel with pinpoint accuracy, causing a huge explosion and major damage to the vessel.”

Below is the comparison between the screengrabs of YouTube and viral videos.

On checking further, we found reports stating that the Norwegian navy blew up one of its own ships to test out their latest long-range stealth missile.

Therefore, with the above information, we can conclude that the claim shared in the video is false.
