Fact Check: Old Video Of Protest In Rajasthan Falsely Linked To Karauli Clashes

Date:

Against the backdrop of recent communal violence in Rajasthan’s Karauli, a video is being widely shared on social media with a claim that Rajasthan voters have resolved not to vote for Congress.

The video is being shared on Facebook with a Hindi caption, “राजस्थान करौली कांड के बाद कांग्रेस सरकार को वोट न देने का संकल्प किया”

(English translation: After the Rajasthan Karauli scandal, resolved not to vote for the Congress government)

Here’s the link to the above post

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

A simple Reverse Image Search, directed us to several Facebook posts which carried the longer version of the same viral video in 2020. The caption of one of the posts read, “राजस्थान के युवा बेरोजगारों ने ली कांग्रेस ओर सभी चुनावों में वोट नहीं देने की शपथ” (English translation: Unemployed youth of Rajasthan took an oath not to vote in Congress and all elections)

Taking a cue from this, we searched further and found a news report published on November 17, 2020, which reported the same incident. According to the report, “Rajasthan Unemployed Unified Federation had organised a demonstration at Sikar Ramlila Maidan and made all the unemployed youth present at the meeting take an oath to boycott the Congress party in all the upcoming elections.”

Similar news reports were also published in Patrika and Bhaskar in November 2020. One of the reports reads, “In Rajasthan, unemployed people shouted against the government from Ramlila Maidan in Sikar on Tuesday for various demands including completion of the pending recruitment process. Hundreds of unemployed were present in the marriage venue of Ramlila Maidan under the banner of the Rajasthan Unified Unemployed Federation.”

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral claim is misleading.
