New Delhi: Traffic piled up on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway (Gurugram-Delhi carriageway) for over 12 hours after a vehicle caught fire near Mahipalpur on Saturday which was later cleared by traffic police on Sunday morning, reported Hindustan Times.
Police officials confirmed that a hydraulic crane machine caught fire which led to traffic congestion near the Sirhaul border and Mahipalpur in Delhi. Traffic piled up with vehicles over a stretch of more than 13 km. Several commuters tweeted about missing their flights which eventually forced the airline authorities to issue a message to the passengers several hours in advance.
It took hours for the police personnel to clear the road and park the vehicle on the side of the road. The traffic started piling up and had an overall knock-on effect on the route.
Several passengers tweeted about the incident complaining about the lack of efficiency of the traffic management system. One of the users also tweeted that police personnel were missing from the spot to clear the traffic jam.
However, the official Twitter handle of the Gurugram Traffic police posted later that the traffic has been cleared near the Terminal 3 exit and the crane has been successfully moved from the road.
