Surge In COVID Cases in China; Lockdown In Shanghai

Date:

China reported its highest one-day spike of Covid cases recording 16,412 cases in a single day. Shanghai reported 13,354 Covid cases alone on Tuesday.

The city official said that the situation on the ground continues to be ‘extremely grim’. The recent surge led to a lockdown confining more than 26 million people inside their homes. The director of Shanghai’s working group on epidemic control, Gu Honghoi, quoted the situation of the surge outbreak in the city as being “still running on high-level”.

The Xi Jinping administration took account of the situation and sent 10,000 health care workers from around the country to help the city control the recent surge in Covid related cases.

The rate of vaccination in China is around 90% but the in-house vaccine produced by China is weaker than the vaccination administered in other countries. The rate of vaccination amongst the older population remains low in China covering half the population which is fully vaccinated.
