Pakistan’s PM Tenures Through The Years

Islamabad (Pakistan): Imran Khan was removed from the office of Prime Minister after a notification issued by the Cabinet Secretariate on Sunday. 

The notification stated, “Consequent upon the dissolution of the Pakistan Assembly by the President of Pakistan in terms of Article 58(1) read with Article 48(1) of the constitution of the Islamic Republic of  Pakistan vide Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs dated 3rd April 2022, Mr. Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi cease to hold the office of Prime Minister of Pakistan with immediate effect.”

The political turmoil in Pakistan is not a one-time affair. Many such disruptions have unfolded in the political history of Pakistan. Pakistan is yet to see a Prime Minister that has served the complete term of 5 years in office. 

 

List of Prime Ministers in Pakistan:

  • Liaquat Ali Khan: He was the first Prime Minister of Pakistan who held office from 15th August 1947 to 16th October 1951 completing 4 years and 63 days in office. He was assassinated while addressing a crowd in Rawalpindi.

 

  • Khwaja Nazimuddin: He took the office of Prime Minister from 17th October 1951 to 17th April 1953. He completed 1 year 182 days in office. His government was dissolved which led to a change in power. 

 

  • Mohammed Ali Bogra: He was the third Prime Minister of Pakistan and served from 17 April 1953 to 12th August 1955. A no-confidence motion was passed against him. 

 

  • Chaudhary Mohammed Ali: He served in the office of Prime Minister from 12th August 1955 to 12th September 1956 completing 1 year and 33 days in office. He was removed by the party with a no-confidence motion passed against him. 

 

  • Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy: He served the office of Prime Minister from 12 September 1956 to 17th October 1957 completing 1 year and 35 days in office. He lost control over his party and lost alliance leading to his removal from the position. 

 

  • Ibrahim Ismail Chundrigar: He served from 17th October 1957 to 16th December 1957 for a total of just 60 days. He was removed by a motion of no-confidence led by the majority party. 

 

  • Feroze Khan Noon: He served in the office of Prime Minister from 16th December 1957 to 7th October 1958 for a total of 295 days in office. His government collapsed after the imposition of martial law. 

 

  • Nurul Amin: He is the shortest-serving Prime Minister of Pakistan who held the office for just 13 days from 7th December 1971 to 20th December 1971. 
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto

 

  • Zulfikar Ali Bhutto: He served the office from 14th August 1973 to 5th July 1977 for a total of 3 years and 325 days. He was deposed by the then army chief General Zia. 

 

  • Muhammad Khan Junejo: He took oath in the office of Prime Minister on 24th March 1985 and held it till 29th May 1988 for a total of 3 years and 66 days. 
Benazir Bhutto
  • Benazir Bhutto: She became the first woman in Pakistan to hold the office of Prime Minister from 2nd December 1988 to 6th August 1990. Her government was dismissed by then President Ghulam Ishaq Khan. 

 

  • Nawaz Sharif: He held the office from 6th November 1990 to 18th July 1993 for a total of 2years and 254 days. He was removed from office by the President but was reinstated by the Supreme Court. 

 

  • Benazir Bhutto: She again became the Prime Minister of Pakistan and held office from 19th October 1993 to 5th November 1996 serving for a total of 3 years. She was removed from her office by President Farooq Leghari. 
Nawaz Sharif
  • Nawaz Sharif: He was reelected and took charge from 17th February 1997 to 12th October 1999 serving for a total of 2 years and 237 days. He was removed by a coup led by General Pervez Musharraf. 

 

  • Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali: He took charge of the office of Prime Minister on 23rd November 2002 and served till 26th June 2004. He however resigned from his position. 

 

  • Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain: He was the Prime Minister of Pakistan for a total of 57 days from 30th June 2004 to 26th August 2004. He was elected by parliament to serve for 50 days and was supposed to be replaced by Shaukat Aziz. 

 

  • Shaukat Aziz: He took charge from 28th August 2004 to 15th November 2007 serving a total of 3 years and 79 days. He left the office after the completion of his parliamentary term. 

 

  • Yousaf Raza Gillani: He held the office of Prime Minister from 25th March 2008 to 19th June 2012 serving for a total of 4 years 86 days in office. He was disqualified from his seat by the Supreme Court under the charges of contempt of court. 

 

  • Raja Pervaiz Ashraf: He held office from 22nd June 2012 to 24th March 2013. He resigned after completing his term in the party. 

 

  • Nawaz Sharif: He was re-elected and took charge from 5th June 2013 to 28th July 2017 serving for a total of 4years and 53 days. He was disqualified by the Supreme Court under corruption charges. 

 

  • Shahid Khaqan Abbasi: Parliament elected him as the Prime Minister from 1st August 2017 till 31st May 2018. His term expired and hence he resigned from the post. 

 

  • Imran Khan: The current Prime Minister of Pakistan took charge on 18th August 2018 and was removed from office on 3rd April 2022 after the Assembly was dissolved.
