A World Health Organization spokesperson, Margaret Harris say Friday that the end of the COVID-19 pandemic was a long way off, citing a rise in cases in its latest weekly data.
Harris while answering a question at a Geneva media briefing about the timing of the pandemic’s end said, “We are definitely in the middle of the pandemic.”
After more than a month of decline in COVID-19 cases, the world is again witnessing a surge, with lockdowns in many places in Asia, said WHO. The surge is mostly due to Omicron and the BA.2 sub-variant along with the lifting of lockdowns and other social measures.
WHO has previously said that the acute phase of a pandemic can end this year but it depends on how quickly the nations across the world vaccinate 70% of their population.
