Fact Check: Old Video Of US Paratrooper Exercise Falsely Linked To Ukraine-Russia War

Amid the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war, a video in which several military troops can be seen paradropping from an aircraft is being widely shared on social media claiming that  they are American soldiers paradropping in Ukraine.

The video is being shared on Facebook with the caption, “American soldiers in Ukraine sky.”

Here’s the link to the above post.

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

Using the InVid Tool, we extracted keyframes from the viral video and performed a Yandex Reverse Image Search. This search directed us to a news report published by Daily Mail on August 1, 2016, that carried screengrabs similar to the viral video. According to the article, the video shows “Paratroopers in North Carolina jump out of the plane in formation during a practice run Daily Mail Online.”

We also found the viral video uploaded on a verified Facebook page named ‘Mandatory’ on June 27, 2019. The caption read, “This U.S. paratrooper exercise has us in awe. This drill looks crazy.”

Searching further, we found the same video uploaded on a verified YouTube channel named ‘AiirSource Military’ on May 28, 2016. The video description read, “Paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Division perform static line jumps from C-17 Globemaster III aircraft over Sicily Drop Zone at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.” According to the page description, “AiirSource Military covers events and missions from the United States Armed Forces: Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard.”

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral video is at least 5 years old and not related to the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war.
