After putting up a dismal show at the just-concluded state assembly elections, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday asked the state party chiefs of the five states to resign.
Among those sacked is Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu who had taken over eight months ago and the party failed to retain the state in the polls. It was the most humiliating loss for the Congress as the state unit was beset with infighting and replacement of chief minister but nothing worked for the party.
Congress President, Smt. Sonia Gandhi has asked the PCC Presidents of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa & Manipur to put in their resignations in order to facilitate reorganisation of PCC’s.

The move by Sonia Gandhi came within days of the Congress Working Committee meeting which discussed the latest poll defeat. She along with her son Rahul Gandhi and daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had offered to resign at the CWC meeting but it was turned down.
