Fact Check: Old Video Of US-Canada Military Exercise Falsely Linked To Ukraine-Russia War

Amid the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war, a video of some military personnel participating in a match of tug of war is being widely shared on social media with a claim that Ukrainian and Russian soldiers are competing against each other.

The video is being shared on Facebook with the caption, “One on one soldier tug of War, Ukraine  vs Russian”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

We noticed that in the viral video, rather than speaking in Ukrainian or Russian language, people were speaking in English. Also, we noticed that the uniform of military personnel had flags similar to Canadian flags.

Taking a cue from this, we did a keyword search and found that the same video was uploaded on a YouTube channel named ‘31CanadianBrigade’ on March 22, 2012. The video description read, “Prior to the departure of 31 Canadian Brigade Group (31 CBG) personnel from Camp Atterbury, Indiana, Canadian soldiers observed US National Guard soldiers playing an interesting version of the game Tug of War.”

We searched further and found an article published by Business Insider on March 24, 2012, which embedded the same video with the headline, “USA VS CANADA: Watch These Soldiers, Duke, It Out In A Game Of Tug Of War.” The same was reported by a Canadian news website on March 28, 2012.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old video showing a military exercise between the USA and Canada is being falsely linked to Ukraine-Russia war. Therefore, the viral claim is misleading.
