Fact Check: Old Video From Libya Falsely Shared As Ukraine Shooting Down Russian Jets

Date:

Amid the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war, a video is being widely shared on social media with a claim that it shows the Ukrainian army shooting down Russia’s fighter jets.

The video is being shared on Facebook with a Hindi caption, “युक्रेन अपनी ताक़त भर लड़ रहा है और उसने रूस के कई फ़ाइटर जेट्स को मार गिराया है. लेकिन, रूसी फ़ौज के चौतरफ़ा हमले को वह कबतक झेल पाएगा? युक्रेन के रूसी फ़ाइटर प्लेन को मार गिराने का यह वीडियो युक्रेन की जाँबाज़ी का गवाह है”

(English translation: Ukraine is fighting with all its might and has shot down several Russian fighter jets. But, how long will he be able to withstand the all-around attack of the Russian army? This video of Ukraine’s shooting down of a Russian fighter plane is a witness to the courage of Ukraine)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

Using the InVid Tool, we extracted keyframes from the viral video and performed a Reverse Image Search. This directed us to a video uploaded by Associated Press on March 19, 2011, that carried snippets from the viral video.

According to the video description, it shows “Libyan rebels shot down a warplane that was bombing their eastern stronghold Benghazi on Saturday, as the opposition accused Moammar Gadhafi’s government of defying calls for an immediate cease-fire.”

Searching further, we found the same video uploaded on the YouTube channel of Channel 4 News on March 19, 2011, which carried the same viral video. The video description reads, “A jet appears to have been shot down over Benghazi. There are reports Colonel Gaddafi’s troops have entered the Libyan city despite claims of a ceasefire.”

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral video is old and not related to the recent Ukraine-Russia conflict. Therefore, the viral claim is misleading.
