Fact Check: Does This Video Show A Mongolian Minister Setting Himself On Fire? Here’s The Truth

Date:

A shocking video in which a man can be seen setting himself on fire is being widely shared on social media claiming that it shows a Mongolian Minister self-immolating as he failed to fulfil his promises to the people of the country.

The video is shared on Facebook with the caption, “The Minister of Public Works in Mongolia promised to build 100,000 units of low-income houses in one year. He said if he fails, he will set himself ablaze. At the end of the year, he built 70,000. So he considered himself a failure in office. He then called a press conference during which he set himself ablaze… Unimaginable in Indian politics !!”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

We extracted keyframes from the viral video and performed a Reverse Image Search. This search directed us to a news report published by the Daily Mail dated November 16, 2015, that carried the same viral video. The article headline reads, “The horrifying moment a Mongolian union boss sets himself on FIRE to protest the sale of the country’s coal mining industry.”

Searching further, we found another news article that reported the same incident. According to the article, “One of the shocking moments in the labour field was when the passionate chairman of the Board of Mongolian Solidarity Labor Union set himself on fire during a press conference in protest of a move by the government of selling of mines to China.” Thus, it is evident from the above information that a Mongolian coal mine union leader set himself on fire in 2015 and not a Mongolian Minister.

The same news was reported by several other media outlets in 2015. They can be seen here and here.

Further, we searched the web with relevant keywords but could not find any credible media report stating that a Mongolian Minister recently set himself on fire. We also could not find any news article that reported any Mongolian Minister promising 1 lakh units of low incomes houses, as claimed in the viral video.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old video is being falsely shared as a Mongolian Minister set himself on fire recently. Therefore, the viral claim is misleading.
