New Delhi: On the second day of war on Friday, Russia said it is willing to conduct negotiations with Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin told his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping during their telephonic conversation.
“President Xi Jinping has just spoken with his Russian counterpart on the phone. President Vladimir Putin said that Russia is willing to have a high-level dialogue with Ukraine,” Hua Chunying, the spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, tweeted.
According to the readout of the call, Xi Jinping pointed out that the situation in eastern Ukraine has “undergone rapid changes, which has drawn great attention from the international community” and that “China supports Russia and Ukraine to resolve the issue through negotiation”.
The telephonic conversation between President Putin and Xi comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the Russian President and appealed for cessation of violence.
External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar received a call from his Ukrainian counterpart and emphasized that India supports diplomacy and dialogue as the way out.
“Discussed predicament of Indian nationals, including students. Appreciate his support for their safe return,” Dr Jaishankar said in a tweet. He said that Ukrain Foreign Minister shared his assessment of the current situation.
