Fact Check: Does The Viral Video Show People Assaulting Samajwadi Party Leader Mohammad Adil Chaudhary? Here’s The Truth

A video is being widely shared on social media in which people can be seen assaulting a person sporting a kurta and black vest coat. The video is being shared with a claim that Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Mohammad Adil Chaudhary was beaten up by people.

Many social media users are sharing the video with a caption that reads in Bengali, “হিন্দুদের হুমকি দেওয়া মিরাট দক্ষিণের এসপি প্রার্থী “মহম্মদ আদিল চৌধুরী”কে শাস্ত্রী নগর বুথে হিন্দুরা লাথি ও ঘুষ দিয়ে মারধর করেছে। ছেঁড়া জামাকাপড়ে দৌড়ে প্রাণ বাঁচিয়েছি.” (English translation as done by Google, “Merut South SP candidate “Mohammad Adil Chowdhury” was beaten by Hindus at Shastri Nagar booth for threatening them. He ran for his life in torn clothes.”)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did a fact-check and found the claim to be misleading.

On doing a Google Reverse Image Search with one of the keyframes, we found that a similar video was uploaded on a YouTube Channel Anytime News on February 13, 2022. A person can see a part of the viral video at around a 14-second timestamp. The video is shared with a title that reads, “सपा नेता विपिन मनोठिया के साथ हुई मारपीट के विरोध में बाल्मिकी समाज ने की महापंचायत.” (English translation: “People of Valmiki Samaj held Mahapanchayat against the beating of SP leader Vipin Manothiya.”)

Taking a hint we searched on Google and found the same video was uploaded by Navbharat Times on February 11, 2022. The video report says that SP Leader Vipin Manothia was beaten up by BJP workers in Meerut.

We also found a report by Live Hindustan on February 11, 2022, that suggests that SP leader Adil Chaudhary accused that he was heckled by BJP supporters while Manothia was beaten. Chaudhary said that while he along with Manothia visited the polling centre, some BJP supporters saw Manothia and started beating him.

Hence, we can ascertain that though both Chaudhary and Manothia were heckled when they visited the polling station, the viral video shows people beating Manothia. Thus, the viral claim is misleading.
