Fact Check: No, The Viral Video Of Scindia Is Not Linked To UP Election Campaign; Here’s The Truth

Amid the ongoing Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, a video of BJP leader Jyotiraditya Scindia has gone viral on social media.

In the video, he can be heard saying, “Vote for Congress.” However, he instantly says to vote for BJP. The caption associated with the video claims that he said this while campaigning for the recent elections.

The video is being shared with a caption that reads, “उत्तरप्रदेश में बौखला गए है आख़िरकार #Scindia का पुराना प्यार निकल ही आया. इसे कहते हैं असली कांग्रेसी तुम छोड़ कर जा तो सकते हो मगर भुला नहीं सकते हो.” (English translation, “They have been furious in Uttar Pradesh, finally the old love of #Scindia came out. This is called real Congressman. You can leave but cannot forget.”)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did a fact-check and found the claim to be misleading.

On searching with the keyword, “Scindia says to vote for Congress accidentally”, we found the same video was uploaded by Crux on November 1, 2020, with the title: “Jyotiraditya Scindia Mocked After He Urges People To Vote For Congress in MP Bypolls In Viral Video.” The description read, “A video of BJP leader Jyotiraditya Scindia accidentally asking the crowd to support Congress has gone viral. Scindia was campaigning for BJP candidate Imarti Devi in Dabra when he asked the crowd to “press the hand button”. Upon realising his mistake, Scindia quickly said “the lotus button will be pressed”. ”

The incident was also reported by many media organisations like Mid-Day and The Hindu.

A Mid-Day report published on November 3, 2020, said, “In a slip of the tongue, BJP Rajya Sabha member Jyotiraditya Scindia asked people to vote for his former party Congress during a campaign for the November 3 by-elections in Madhya Pradesh. A video, in which Scindia is seen seeking votes for the Congress during a rally in favour of BJP candidate Imarti Devi from Dabra town in Gwalior, has gone viral on social media.”

Thus, the viral video of Scindia is old and the incident happened during Madhya Pradesh election campaign and is being shared with a misleading narrative linking it to ongoing UP elections.
