India Calls For Restraint At UNSC Emergency Session On Russia-Ukraine Conflict: 10 Things To Know

Concerned over the escalating tension along the border of Ukraine with Russia, India on Tuesday strongly emphasized the need for all sides to exercise the utmost restraint and intensify diplomatic efforts to ensure a mutually amicable solution.

10 things to know

1. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has convened an emergency meeting on Ukraine’s situation. The urgency is evident from the fact that it is late evening in New York.

2. The session comes at the request of Kyiv and UNSC members – the US, UK, Mexico, and six other European countries

3. Russia is in the chair of the UNSC currently.

4. It is an open meeting.

5. India makes a statement and calls for restraint.

6. Safety & security of civilians essential. More than 20,000 Indian students& nationals live & study in different parts of Ukraine, incl in its border areas. The well-being of Indians is of priority to us, says India’s Permanent Rep to United Nations TS Tirumurti.

9. US has sent remaining diplomats in Ukraine to Poland ‘for security reasons’.

10. President Biden issued an Executive Order that prohibits new investment, trade, and financing by US persons to, from, or in the so-called DNR and LNR regions of Ukraine, reads the statement by press Secy Jen Psaki on Russian announcement on eastern Ukraine.
