Fact Check: No, The Incident In This Viral Video Did Not Happen During Samajwadi Party Rule In UP

Date:

Amidst the ongoing Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, a disturbing video of a group of men manhandling and molesting two girls has surfaced on social media with the claim that the incident took place during the Samajwadi Party rule in UP. The video further shows a group of people humiliating the girls even as they kept begging to be spared.

A Facebook user shared the video with a caption in Hindi that roughly translates to, “This video is of the time of former SP govt. Choose the opponent only if you are ready to adopt this again. Only Yogi ji can stop this.”

The video is doing rounds on Twitter with the same claim.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video and found it to be shared with a false claim.

With the help of a Reverse Image Search, we found a news report on the Aaj Tak website carrying the same visuals. The article was published on May 28, 2017. India Today also published a report on this incident which occurred on May 22, 2017, when a group of men heckled and harassed two women in Rampur. UP police successfully arrested four prime accused in the case.

We also came across a tweet by the UP Police Fact Check on February 15, 2022, stating that the incident took place in 2017 and the action has been taken as per the law in the case.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Yogi Adityanath took oath as the 21st Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh on March 19, 2017. And as the incident took place in May, it happened during  BJP regime in UP.

Therefore, it can be concluded that the video is viral with a false claim.
