Fact Check: Do Humanoid Pylons Carry Electric Cables In Iceland? Here’s The Truth

Date:

A picture is going viral on social media with a claim that in Iceland, electric cables are  carried by human shaped pylons.

The Facebook post read, “Human pylons carry electricity across Iceland.”

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found it to be misleading.

We ran a keyword search and found a report by the Wired UK from 2010 stating that ‘An architecture and design firm called Choi+Shine has submitted a design for the Icelandic High-Voltage Electrical Pylon International Design Competition which proposes giant human-shaped pylons carrying electricity cables across the country’s landscape.’

Taking a cue, we searched and found similar images on the website of Choi+Shine. The image was captioned, “The Land of Giants™ : Proposal for Landsnet, Iceland.”

We found another report on the website grapevine.in dated October 16, 2015, where it was mentioned that the Human Shaped Pylons were never actually built in Iceland but the discussion to build one was underway.

The report mentioned that ‘the idea behind the humanoid pylons dates back to 2008 when Landsnet (which provides the electrical infrastructure in Iceland) hosted a design contest. The firm Choi + Shine submitted a concept for Land of Giants, electric towers based on the current design, shaped like people.’ However, Landsnet did not see fit to move forward with the design.

We found that similar pictures were also shared by Choi+Shine on their Instagram account on with the caption, “Transforming mundane #infrastructure into functional #PublicArtwork in a #landscape, industrial product of necessity becomes poetic landmark to visit. Modular kit of parts allows the tower to be site specific. Current proposals include locations in Iceland, Norway, France, Korea, Canada and USA.”

Moreover, taking to AFP on January 24, 2022, a company representative said, “The Giants have been designed and engineered, but not yet constructed.” The same was also confirmed by Landsnet spokesman.

Hence, from the above fact check, it is clear that the pictures in circulation were proposed designs and not of any actual construction.
