A video in which a person can be seen unfurling a flag is being increasingly shared on social media with a claim that Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Purnachandra Bauri hoisted the party flag instead of the national flag on Republic Day.
The video is being shared on Facebook with a caption in Bengali that can be roughly translated in English to, “The patriotism or patriotism of the grassroots leaders is astonishing!!! Who knows which country’s animals are these???!!! Today on Republic Day instead of the national flag, the Trinamool flag was hoisted; along with the “inspired” brothers invented an unparalleled new national anthem!!! Probably ex MLA Shri Purnachandra Bauri is present, along with Raghunathpur 1 Block President Mihir Bauri and Zilla Parishad Member Orphaned Bojhi”

Looking closely at the viral video, we noticed a Tricolour mark on the ground circling the pole where the TMC flag was being hoisted. At the end of the video, we found another Tricolour mark on the ground hinting that there might have been another pole nearby.
Using the InVid Tool, we extracted keyframes from the viral video and performed a Reverse Image Search with relevant keywords. This search directed us to the Facebook page of Raghunathpur TMC – “Raghunathpurer Gorbo Mamata”. The post carried several images similar to the viral video. In these images, one can clearly see the national flag as well as the TMC flag. The text reads: Today some people have created a storm by distorting the truth of a post, cropping the pic, I will tell them if you have the courage to give the full video, maybe I will post the original pictures.
Searching further, we found a video uploaded on the Facebook page of Raghunathpur TMC on January 27 in which the same person can be seen hoisting the national flag at the same event. The video description can be translated from Bengali to English as, “Yesterday, BJP leader Shuvendu Adhikari tried to insult the Trinamool Congress on the occasion of Republic Day through a video. This is not the culture of our Trinamool Congress. We all abide by the Constitution of India to the letter. This kind of culture is only used by BJP to confuse people.”
We then compared the viral video with the images and video uploaded on the Facebook page and found many similarities between them.
Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral video is being shared with misleading claims stating that the TMC leader only unfurled the TMC flag on Republic Day.
