Ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab, a video has surfaced on social media platforms showing a man being attacked by some people as he is running with some policemen. It is being claimed that it shows a BJP leader campaigning for Punjab elections was attacked by a group of people with footwear and sticks.
A Facebook user shared the video with a caption in Hindi that roughly translates to, “Like #Uttar Pradesh, trends have started coming from #Punjab too.
In Punjab also #BJP is running ahead and behind him, the public is welcoming them with footwear and sticks.”

The video is viral on Twitter too with a similar caption.

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video and found it to be shared with a misleading claim.
With the help of a Reverse Image Search, we found a screengrab of the video carried in a report by news agency ANI on July 11, 2021. “BJP leader, workers ‘attacked’ by farmers in Punjab, allege police involvement; DSP refutes claims,” the headline read.
As per the report, Punjab BJP leader Bhupesh Aggarwal and other local leaders were allegedly attacked by farmers in July 2021, in Patiala in the backdrop of farmers’ protest.
ANI also shared visuals from the same incident on Twitter.
Zee Punjab Haryana Himachal also shared a video report carrying the viral video on the incident on July 11, 2021.
As some social media users claimed that the man in the viral video is a BJP MLA, we searched for Bhupesh Aggarwal on MyNeta which revealed that he is not an MLA.
Therefore, an old video from Punjab is being falsely shared as recent.
