Fact Check: Old Image Of Injured Person Falsely Linked To Protest Over Railway Recruitment In UP

Date:

Students are protesting against alleged irregularities in the Railway Recruitment Board’s examination in Uttar Pradesh. To dissuade protesters, Uttar Pradesh Police lathi-charged many protesting aspirants in Prayagraj.

In this backdrop, a photograph of an injured youth has gone viral on social media with a caption stating that the youth was injured due to police crackdown.

The Hindi text embedded on the image reads, “बाबा मुख्यमंत्री को धन्यवाद कहना.. पढ़ने गए बच्चे जिंदा घर लौट सके।” (English translation: Say thanks to the Chief Minister as kids who went to study came back home alive.)

The image is being shared with the caption that reads, “हमारे मुख्यमंत्री महोदय से कह देना की मेरा बेटा ज़िंदा लौट आया ।।।” (English translation: Tell our Chief Minister that my son came back alive …)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did a fact-check and found the claim to be misleading.

On doing a Google Reverse Image Search, we found the same image was uploaded by a Twitter user on March 27, 2020, with the caption that reads, ‘Dekhiye Modiji’.

We found that the same image was also uploaded by another Twitter user on March 28, 2020. The text can be translated in English to: “If this is the situation of Indian police then people will due to police brutality first than due to COVID-19.”

PIB Fact check also tweeted to refute the viral content. The tweet read, “A contextually misleading image is being circulated on social media. #PIBFactCheck This image is old and was found to be viral with fake claims on numerous occasions. Kindly refrain from sharing such misleading images.”

Thus, it can be concluded that an old video has gone viral on social media with a misleading claim linking it to police crackdown on protesters with regards to alleged irregularities in the Railway Recruitment Board examination.
