Fact Check: Photo Of Rahul Gandhi Wearing A Mask Viral With False Claim

An image of former Congress president Rahul Gandhi sitting along with others in what appears to be feast wearing a mask has surfaced on social media platforms with a sarcastic claim that he is having food with his mask on.

A Facebook user shared the image with a caption in Hindi that can be translates to: First man to eat food while wearing a mask.

(Original: मास्क लगा कर खाना खाने वाला पहला आदमी)

The same image is doing rounds on Twitter with the same claim.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral image and found it to be shared with a false claim.

With the help of a Reverse Image Search, we found a tweet on the official page Tamil Nadu Congress Committee carrying the viral image. The images were shared on January 24, 2021, with a caption that translates to, “It is a pleasure to have food with the loving and kind Tamil people. – President Rahul Gandhi.”

In the other pictures, he can be seen having food without a mask.

We also found a video uploaded on the PuthiyathalaimuraiTV YouTube channel on January 24, 2021. The news report showed the Congress leader removing his mask while eating.

We also found a news report published by The Hindu on January 25, 2021, carrying a photograph from the same event where Rahul Gandhi can be having food after removing his mask.


As per the news report, the image is from a gathering during a reception organized in Perundurai, Erode, on January 24, 2021.

Therefore, it can be concluded that Rahul Gandhi’s image is being shared with a false  claim.
