Fact Check: Old Picture From Rajasthan Falsely Shared To Suggest BJP Leader Assaulted In UP

In the run-up to the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, a picture of a man in torn clothes is being circulated online with a claim that he is a BJP leader who has been manhandled by a mob when he went to campaign for votes.

The image was captioned: “वोट माँगने जनता के बीच गए #भाजपा नेता जी
मुख्यमंत्री जी से धन्यवाद कह देना आपने यूपी में इतने अच्छे काम किये है कि मैं #जिन्दा लौट सका”

(English Translation: BJP leader went among the public to ask for votes…thanked the Chief Minister…said you have done such good work in UP that I could return alive.)

Here’s the link to the above post.

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be misleading.

We put the image through Reverse Image Search and found the same image in an article by Aaj Tak dated July 31, 2021.

According to the report, BJP leader Kailash Meghwal was allegedly assaulted by some farmers and his clothes got torn in the scuffle. The report mentioned that incident took place in Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar district.

A report by NDTV mentioned that ‘the incident took place at Ganga Singh Chowk in Sri Ganganagar where some farmers gathered during the BJP’s sit-in over the law and order, and water for irrigation’. The Times Of India and Zee News also covered the same incident in July 2021.

Video of the incident was also shared by TV9 Bharatvarsh on YouTube on July 30, 2021.

Thus, from the above information, it is clear that a picture from Rajasthan is being shared as that of Uttar Pradesh with misleading claim.
