The London police will probe allegations of lockdown parties at 10 Downing Street, the official residence of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, BBC reported on Tuesday.
“The Met is now investigating a number of events that took place at Downing Street and Whitehall in the last two years in relation to potential breaches of Covid-19 regulations,” Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick told the London Assembly local authority.
As per reports, Johnson told the Commons that he welcomed the investigation as it would “give the public the clarity it needs” over the allegations. Meanwhile, his spokesman also said the PM did not believe he had broken the law.
Boris Johnson has been facing calls to resign amid allegations that a string of parties was held at Downing Street while the rest of the country was in lockdown.
On Monday, reports came in that Johnson attended a birthday party in his Downing Street office and later hosted friends at his official residence upstairs in June 2020, AP reported.
Johnson apologized for attending a party in the garden of his Downing Street offices in May 2020 stating that he had considered it a work gathering that fell within the social distancing rules in place at the time.
Last week, Boris Johnson’s former chief adviser Dominic Cummings has accused the British PM of lying to parliament that he thought a drinks party held in the Downing Street garden during the first lockdown was work-related.
