Fact Check: Small Clip From Akhilesh Yadav’s Speech Viral With Misleading Claim

Ahead of Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, a video featuring a short speech by former Uttar Pradesh CM and Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav is being widely circulated on social media with a claim that he said the state can only progress if Yogi Adityanath comes to power.

A Facebook user shared the video with a caption in Hindi that roughly translates to, “Samajwadi party goons, listen to what your thieves are saying. If the Yogi government is formed in UP, then only Uttar Pradesh will go on the path of happiness.”

(Original: सपाई गुंडों सुन लो तुम्हारे टोंटीचोर क्या बोल रहे है यूपी में योगी सरकार बनेगी तभी उत्तरप्रदेश खुशहाली के रास्ते पर जायेगा ।।)

The video is also doing rounds on Twitter with a similar caption.

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video and found that the clip was shared out of context.

A closer look at the video shows the logo of “Headlines India” on the top right corner of the screen. We checked the Headlines India‘s Facebook and YouTube page and found a longer version of Yadav’s speech uploaded on January 2, 2022. One can find the viral clip starting from 0:58 seconds in the original video.

In the video, Yadav says “If UP has to be taken on the path of well being, then a capable(yogya) government should be formed, only then will Uttar Pradesh go on the path of well being (translated from Hindi).”

He used the word “yogya” as a wordplay which means “competent” in Hindi, and not the word “Yogi” as is being claimed.

Therefore, a small clip of SP leader Akhilesh Yadav’s speech is being shared out of context.
