Fact Check: Did Digvijay Singh Say ‘There Is No Harm In Having Beef’? Here’s The Truth

Date:

A video is being shared on social media platforms where Congress leader Digvijay Singh can be heard saying that there is no harm in eating beef.

Facebook users are sharing the video with the caption, “#गाय कहा से हमारी माता हो सकती है,
गौ मांस खाने में कोई बुराई नही है – #दिग्विजय सिंह पूर्व मुख्यमंत्री व #कांग्रेस के दिग्गज नेता इस #दोगले के लिये दो शब्द!!”

(English Translation: How can cows be our mother? There is no harm in having beef – former CM and Congress leader Digvijay Singh.)

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found it to be misleading.

While looking for similar posts on Facebook, we found that the longer version of the same video was uploaded on the Facebook page of ABP News on December 25, 2021.

The caption of the video can be roughly translated in English to, “In a program in Bhopal, Congress leader Digvijay Singh said that ‘Savarkar has written in his book that Hinduism has nothing to do with Hindutva. He has also written that the cow is an animal that rolls in its own faeces, how can it be our mother, there is nothing wrong in eating beef. This is what Savarkar has said.”
#DigvijaySingh #MadhyaPradesh #Bhopal #Savarkar #VinayakSavarkar #Cow #Beef #CowWorship #SavarkarBook”

We then ran a search and found multiple media reports from December 25, 2021, reporting the same.

According to the report by NDTV, Digvijay made the statement at Jan Jagran Abhiyan in Bhopal. “Veer Savarkar, in his book, had said that Hinduism has nothing to do with Hindutva. He never considered cow as ‘mata‘ (mother) and had no problem in consuming beef,” the report quoted Digvijay Singh as saying.

The Free Press Journal also reported the same with the headline, “Watch Video: Savarkar has written there is no problem in eating beef, says Digvijay Singh.”

The same video was also shared by ANI on Twitter. “#WATCH | Veer Savarkar in his book has written that the Hindu religion doesn’t have any relation with Hindutva. He also wrote that cow… can’t be our mother and there is no problem in eating cow beef: Congress leader Digvijaya Singh in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal,” the post was captioned.

Hence, from the above fact check, it is clear that the small clip from the video has been taken out of context and is being shared with misleading claims.
