Fact Check: Old Video Of Pregnant Lady Being Assaulted Resurfaces On Social Media With Misleading Claim

On December 4, 2021, Uttar Pradesh Police resorted to lathi-charge when around 69,000 assistant teachers were taking out a candle march in Lucknow. The assistant teachers were raising recruitment issues in government schools and were moving towards Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s residence.

In the above context, a video has gone viral on social media with a claim that police hit a pregnant woman with a baton. The video is shared with a caption that reads, “जाहिलों नौकरी मत दो लेकिन गर्भवती लड़कियों के पेट पर लाठी तो मत मारो: उत्तर प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री योगी जी कहते है कि प्रदेश में इतनी नौकरियां है कि योग्य उम्मीदवार नही मिलते । वहीं दूसरी ओर लखनऊ में जब योग्य बी एड अभ्यर्थी नौकरियां मांगते है तो योगी जी की तानाशाही पुलिस उन पर लाठियां बरसाती है शर्मनाक ये कि वे गर्भवती महिलाओं का भी ख्याल नही करते उनके पेट मे लाठी मारते हैं।”

(English translation: Do not give jobs to the foolish, but do not hit the pregnant girls with sticks: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi ji says that there are so many jobs in the state that qualified candidates are not available. On the other hand, in Lucknow, when eligible B.Ed candidates ask for jobs, Yogi’s dictatorial police shower sticks on them, shameful that they don’t even take care of pregnant women and beat them.”

NewsMobile did a fact-check and found the claim to be misleading.

On breaking the video into multiple keyframes using InVid tools and doing a Google Reverse Image Search, we found the same video was uploaded by Twitter user Pankhuri Pathak on September 5, 2018, with a caption: “आज BEDTET2011 के अभ्यर्थियों पर लाठियाँ बरसाते समय @Uppolice ने गर्भवती महिला के पेट पर लाठी मार दी । ये कैसा महिला सम्मान है ? शर्म आती है @myogiadityanath जी .. उत्तर प्रदेश की चीख़ें सुन कर शर्म आ रही है ? या किसी और का दुःख दर्द महसूस करने की क्षमता ख़त्म हो चुकी है ?”

(English translation: Today, while hitting the candidates of BEDTET2011 with stick @Uppolice hit on the stomach of a pregnant woman. What kind of female honour is this? Shame on you @myogiadityanath ji.. scared to hear the screams of Uttar Pradesh? Or have lost the ability to feel the pain of others?)

We found that the incident was also reported by One India on September 5, 2018. According to the report, Lucknow Police had beaten a pregnant woman while she was protesting along with other teachers on Teachers’ Day in relation to BEd TET.

Uttar Pradesh police also refuted the viral claim mentioning that an old video is being shared on social media with a misleading claim.

Thus, we can ascertain that the viral video is old and is being shared with a misleading claim.
