Fact Check: Old Image From Rajasthan Shared As People Burning BJP Flag In Uttar Pradesh

Ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, a picture of some people burning BJP’s flag is doing rounds on social media with a claim that in UP’s Deoria district set the party flag ablaze.

“उत्तर प्रदेश के देवरिया जिले में #भाजपा कार्यालय के सामने लोगो ने #भाजपा_के_झंडे_जलाकर भाजपा को वोट न देने की अपील की ।।#पूर्वांचल_के_शेर,” the caption read.

(English Translation: People appealed not to vote for BJP by burning BJP flags in Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh.)

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found the claim to be false.

We put the picture through Reverse Image Search and came across a YouTube video, dated November 21, 2018. The video was titled, ‘भाजपा से बागी हुए हंसराज पटेल के समर्थकों द्वारा BJP पार्टी के बैनर झंडे जलाए’ and it was geo tagged to Kotputli, Rajasthan.

A similar video was also uploaded by ETV Bharat Rajasthan. According to the video, Hansraj Patel’s supporters were angry after he was denied a ticket for contesting assembly elections in Rajasthan.  

When we compared the viral picture to keyframes of the YouTube video, we found that the video and the picture are from the same location featuring the same set of people.

We ran a keyword search and found a similar report by Danik Baskar. The article is now unavailable but we were able to trace the Google cached preview using Cached View.

In conclusion, we can say that an old picture from Rajasthan is being falsely shared as people burning BJP flag in Uttar Pradesh.
