The image is being shared on Facebook with the caption, “Niagara Falls in Canada lit up in honour of Bangladesh’s Victory Day.”

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.
Starting with our investigation, we did a keyword search but could not find any credible media report corroborating the viral claim.
Further, we searched about Niagara Falls and found that the falls lie on the border between Ontario, Canada, and New York, United States. Horseshoe Falls is situated in Ontario, Canada.
Searching further, we found that “Niagara Parks” has every detail related to Niagara Falls on the Canadian side. We checked the illumination schedule mentioned on the above website as it mentions every detail about the illumination of the waterfalls from December 2021 to November 2022. We could not find any mention of Bangladesh’s Victory Day in the schedule.
We also checked social media handles of Niagara Parks but could not find any mention of Bangladesh’s Victory Day. We even checked the official Facebook page of the High Commission of Canada to Bangladesh where Bangladesh was congratulated on its 50th victory anniversary. Here also there was no mention of Niagara Falls being illuminated in green and red.
We tried to find the truth behind the viral image and found a tweet dated December 5 that carried the same image with the caption “Niagara Falls on the weekend.”
Another tweet carrying the same image stated, “Niagra Falls in Canada lit up in honour of Bangladesh’s Victory Day over the weekend.”
More searches led us to a Facebook post that carried the same viral image with the caption, “No people this is not a light in honour of Bangladesh, this is Christmas light, time count starts exactly 12 days before Christmas and since then everyone including all the buildings started lighting, I have started lighting Christmas tree in my house and today. This is mainly American culture, and now Canada is the same as many European countries have been lighting red green lamps twelve days ago known as the Christmas colour. Bangladesh has nothing to do with this.”
Taking a cue from this, we searched for stock images of Canada’s Niagara Falls during the Christmas season and found many similar images.
Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral claim is misleading and the green-red illumination of Niagara Falls has nothing to do with Bangladesh’s Victory Day celebrations.
