Fact Check: Old Image Of Indira Gandhi Edited To Suggest She Was Feasting On Seafood

An image of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is being shared on social media with a claim that despite being a ‘Dattatreya Brahmin’, she enjoyed seafood.

The image is being shared on Facebook with a caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated in English to, “Dattatreya Brahmin Rahul Gandhi’s grandmother enjoying seafood.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

Doing a Reverse Image Search, we were directed to a news article published by The Hindu in 2017 which carried the same viral image with the caption, “Former prime minister Indira Gandhi digging heartily into maize corn.” The article talks about the demise of veteran photographer Sridhar Naidu.

“The most acclaimed of his contributions was the exclusive photograph of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi ravenously eating roasted corn (Makka butta) at Fateh Maidan Club,” reads the article.

Looking closely at the original image, one can clearly notice that Indira was feasting on  roasted corn and not seafood as claimed in the viral post.

Below is the comparison between the viral image and the original image. It is evident that certain sections of corn have been intentionally blurred to make it look like seafood.

Also, according to the book ‘The Unseen Indira Gandhi: Through Her Physician’s Eyes’ by Dr KP Mathur, Indira Gandhi liked fish. This clearly means she was not a vegetarian.

An excerpt from the book reads, “Once, in Murshidabad in West Bengal, for lunch, the normal dal roti and chawal was served for her but she could smell fish being cooked in mustard oil, ready to be served. She immediately asked for it and had a liberal helping of “mach-bhat” and liked it very much.”

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an edited image is being falsely shared as Indira Gandhi enjoying seafood.
