Germany’s Covid-19 Death Toll Breaches 100,000 Mark

Germany crossed the threshold of 100,000 Covid-19 deaths, as new cases of coronavirus are at rise and hospitals in some hotspots are under severe pressure.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic last year, 100,481 people have died according to the Worldometer. The death toll is still less than the in the UK, France or Italy, which each passed 100,000 some time ago. The United States still has the highest number of COVID-19 deaths with toll surpassing over 790,000.

Daily deaths in Germany is only a fifth of the level seen last winter, with about 68% of the population fully vaccinated against the disease.

As the COVID-19 cases are on rise, intensive care units are filling up and the health crisis is posing an immediate challenge to the new coalition government set to take over from Angela Merkel’s cabinet.
