Indore city (Madhya Pradesh) earned the title of the country’s cleanest city for the 5th consecutive time under the 6th edition of Swachh Survekshan 2021. Surat (Gujarat) and Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh) grabbed the second and third positions respectively.
Among the states, Chhattisgarh has been awarded the top position for the country’s cleanest state. While Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) got the first position in the cleanest Ganga town category.
President Ram Nath Kovind awarded the cleanest cities and states at the ‘Swachh Amrit Mahotsav’ function organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi.
Swachh Survekshan is a part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, aiming to make the country clean and free of open defecation. The annual survey is conducted with parameters of cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation in cities and towns across India.
A total of 4,320 cities participated in the 2021 edition of the Swachh Survekshan, making it the world’s largest urban cleanliness survey.
Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of State, Kaushal Kishore, Chief Ministers and Urban Development Ministers, 1,200 guests as diplomats, state and city administrators and senior officials, sector partners, and brand ambassadors, NGOs, and CSOs were present during the award ceremony.
Hardeep Singh Puri, Union minister for housing and urban affairs, took to Twitter to congratulate people, political leaders and Municipal Corporation and wrote, “Indore is India’s cleanest city for the 5th year in a row. Heartiest congratulations to the people, political leadership, Municipal Corporation, Swachhagrahis & Safaimitras for their exemplary commitment towards keeping the city on top,”

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also congratulated for winning the crown of India’s cleanest for the fifth time.
