In a big announcement, in his address to the nation on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, PM Modi said the three farm laws will be repealed in the coming Winter session of Parliament.

The three contentious farm laws -Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; (2) Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020; and (3)Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 – enacted by the Parliament in September 2020, have been opposed by several farmers organizations.

Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait on Friday said that the farmers’ protest will not end till the three farm laws are formally repealed in Parliament. He tweeted the same shortly after PM Modi announced that the central government has decided to withdraw the three farm bills.

Many leaders across the political spectrum have reacted to the Prime Minister’s announcement on repealing the farm laws.

“Farmers’ satyagraha has defeated arrogance. Congratulations for this victory over injustice,” Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh tweeted: “Great news! Thankful to PM @narendramodi ji for acceding to the demands of every punjabi & repealing the 3 black laws on the pious occasion of #GuruNanakJayanti. I am sure the central govt will continue to work in tandem for the development of Kisani! #NoFarmers_NoFood @AmitShah,” Singh said in a tweet.

“You’re sacrifice has paid dividends,” tweets Navjot Singh Sidhu.

“What cannot be achieved by democratic protests can be achieved by the fear of impending elections! Anyway, it is a great victory for the farmers and for the Congress party which was unwavering in its opposition to the farm laws,” tweeted P. Chidambaram.
