Fact Check: Image From Bangladesh Falsely Shared As People Offering Prayers In India

An image in which a group of people can be seen offering Namaz in the middle of a road has gone viral on social media claiming that this image is from India.

The image is shared on Facebook with a caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated in English to, “This sweet secular scene only you see in India If you do this in the remaining 56 Muslim countries, you are thrown in jail. This is just testing to capture. The patience of Hindus, the strength, so that how much can be suppressed?”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

Doing a simple Reverse Image Search directed us to a tweet uploaded on February 12, 2021, that carried the same viral image. The tweet text reads, “The scene from the outside of Sobhanbag Mosque during the Jumma Prayers today.” Sobhanbag Mosque is located in Bangladesh.

Taking a cue from this, we searched further and found a video uploaded on the verified Facebook page of Voice of America on June 1, 2019, that carried visuals similar to the viral image. The video description reads, “Hundreds of Bangladeshi Muslims packed one of the mosques in Dhaka to join the special prayers on the last Friday, May 31, of Ramadan. Devotees at Sobhanbagh mosque took parts of the street due to the sheer number of people attending the Friday prayers.”

We searched this location on Google Street View. The image of this mosque in Dhaka is also visible in Google Street View.

Searching further, we found a similar image uploaded on Alamy on April 16, 2021, with the description, “Dhaka, Bangladesh. 16th April 2021. Muslims performed the Jumma prayer on a street without maintaining any kind of social distance the first Friday of the holy month of Ramadan during Bangladesh’s authorities enforced a strict lockdown to combat the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus, in Dhaka, Bangladesh on April 16, 2021.”

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an image from Bangladesh is being falsely shared as people offering Namaz in the middle of a road in India.
