A video of men in uniform beating people on streets with lathis is being shared on social media with a claim that police thrashed people for offering Namaz on the road in Uttar Pradesh.
The video was shared with the caption, “New rule in Uttar Pradesh no namaz on roads…JAY ho Yogi ji. JAY Shree Ram.”
We also got a request to check the same on our WhatsApp tipline number.
NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be false.
Upon carefully examining the video, we noticed a few shop names and billboards written in Hindi like ‘एस दीन टेलर्स’ (S Deen Tailors) and ‘अराईना’ (Erina).
Another keyword search led us to a report by MP Tak dated October 19, 2021, taken at the same location. “Jabalpur में धार्मिक जुलूस के दौरान पथराव, पुलिस ने उपद्रवियों को जोरदार ढंग से खदेड़ा ! | MPTAK,” the headline of the report read. (English Translation: Stone pelting during a religious procession in Jabalpur, miscreants chased by the police).
We noticed that the same shopfronts are visible in both videos.
Another video report by The Quint also carried similar visuals from the same location.
According to the report by The Quint, ‘People took out the procession of Milad-un-Nabi in MP’s Dhar, Jabalpur and Barwani without permission. During this, there was a clash between the police administration and the people in the procession. Police used force to disperse the crowd.”
Hence, from the above information, it is clear that a video from Madhya Pradesh is being shared as that of UP with a false claim.
