Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan announced his resignation from the advertisement campaign of the paan-masala brand “Kamla Pasand” on Monday and has returned the money he received in the profit of promoting it.
The actor, in his recent blog post, announced that he is no longer endorsing Kamla Pasand. The post reads that Amitabh Bachchan terminated the contract because he was unaware that the advertisement falls under surrogate advertising.
The blog post is addressed by “the office of Mr. Amitabh Bachchan”, it reads “A few days after the commercial was aired, Mr. Bachchan contacted the brand and stepped out of it last week. Upon checking why this sudden move – it was revealed that when Mr. Bachchan became associated with the brand, he wasn’t aware that it falls under surrogate advertising,”
Adding the announcement it said, “Mr. Bachchan has terminated the contract with the brand, has written to them his termination and has returned the money received for the promotion.”
Amitabh Bachchan took this move after his 79th birthday and a month after an NGO, National Organisation for Tobacco Eradication (NOTE) appealed to him to not be a part of advertisements that promote paan masala brands and support the cause of the anti-tobacco movement.
